Faux Pas Friday!

Faux-pas Fridays is a new weekly post I'm starting in which every week I'll talk about a different fashion "faux pas" or "pet peeve" that just kinda bugs me.
Now I'm the first to admit to making many fashion mistakes myself, so just keep in mind, this is all in good fun and is meant to be humorous :)

Today's FF post is about wearing pajamas in public.  And I'm not talking about the designer pajama-type ensembles that celebs have been seen wearing lately.  Nor am I talking about "lounge wear".
No... I'm talking full-fledged, cartoon printed, pajama bottoms.  What is wrong with the world when people can't even change into a pair of yoga pants to go to the grocery store or to the bank?!  Is that too much to ask for?
Look, I get it, I love my pjs too... but that doesn't mean I wear them out!  It takes a minute to change into a different pair of pants and believe me, it's well worth the time investment!  PJs in public needs to stop!!
What are your fashion pet peeves?  I'd love to hear!

Dressing up your Denim!!

Who doesn't love their jeans?  Jeans are such a closet staple, and can be worn in endless ways.  While jeans are generally considered a casual garment, they can easily be dressed up.
There are however, a few things to pay attention to:
  • The Colour- To take your denim to the next level, ensure that you've chosen a dark wash as opposed to a light or faded wash.  And definitely no rips!
  • The Fit- You want to make sure they fit well, anything too baggy won't work.  Skinny or subtly flared jeans will look the best when you're aiming for a dressier look.  Boyfriend fit or extreme flares/bell bottoms definitely say CASUAL!
  • The Shoes- The shoe you choose is important.  Save the sneakers or flip-flops for your casual days.  For a dressed up look, you can't go wrong with a pump or a ballet flat.  As long as they're not ratty or beat-up looking!  Sandals would work too, but they should be a dressy sandal, not something summery.
  • The Top- What you wear with your jeans takes the outfit to whatever level you want to go.  Jeans day at work?  A blazer and pumps with some simple accessories (like I've done here) are the way to go.  If you're headed out for the night, lose the blazer and swap the shoes for a sexier strappy sandal!

Blazer is from Dynamite; Jeans are Rag & Bone

I hope this helps, and you have fun dressing up your denim!!

Shoes are Rock & Republic from Kohl's

Planning Outfits... Not a Bad Idea!

I really don't know how it happens.  I wake up super early and have hours to get ready, but somewhere between working out, getting the kids ready and getting myself ready, the time just disappears!  And, as you can imagine, this of course can lead to some hectic mornings!
But I'm changing my ways!  I've discovered how helpful a little planning can be.  I've always kinda semi-planned my outfits, just mentally thinking of what to wear the next day.  But then the next morning, inevitably, either the weather would mess with what I had chosen, or, more often, the imagined outfit just didn't work in real life, cuz it was either wrinkled (who has time for ironing in the morning?!)  or didn't work on my body the way my brain thought it would!
So now I fully plan my outfits the night before, down to the accessories, and have it all laid out and ready to go for the morning.  And I do the same for my boys (you'd be surprised how picky little boys can be about their outfits!).  This way there are no surprises, and no time wasted choosing something new to wear.
If you struggle with hectic mornings too, try pre-planning your outfits; its amazing how much smoother your mornings can be.  Another bonus: you'll look perfectly put-together :)
Are you a pre-planner?  I'd love to hear :)

Blanket Scarf Obsession!

It seems that blanket scarves are taking the street style world by storm.  They are everywhere this season, and I'm loving it!  I was gifted this beauty from Aritzia last year, and I was immediately obsessed.  Only problem was that blanket scarves weren't so widespread last year, and I felt a little odd wearing mine.  I loved the fluffy coziness of it, but I feared that people would think I was actually wearing a blanket around my neck! (Actually my husband still thinks that, but that's ok, haha!)
Fast forward to this year, and blanket scarves are all the rage.  My Instagram feed is filled with stylish women wearing them in all sorts of colours and patterns, and even all around me, I'm seeing them being worn many different ways.

There are endless tutorials online to show you how to wear a blanket scarf (just google it), so I won't get into that here.  This is my favorite way, all bundled up around the neck.  A close favorite is just messily thrown over my neck/shoulders which gives a more undone, layered look.

When you're picking out your scarf, one thing to be aware of is the material.  It has to be thick enough to be fluffy (just like a blanket!), but if you get one that's too thick or structured, it won't sit right.  I made that mistake last year, and bought a beautiful printed one from H&M, but it was far too thick and stiff to wear as a scarf, so now I use it as an actual blanket!

Are you joining the blanket scarf obsession?  What are your favorite ways to wear it?  I'd love to hear!

Faux Pas Friday!!

Today's FF post is about leggings worn as pants!  What is up with that?  Leggings were never meant to be pants, yet WAY too many girls and women are treating them as such.   They are meant to be a layering piece, to be worn with longer tops that "C-T-C", not short tops that leave nothing to the imagination!
Maybe they're getting things confused with yoga pants??  Now those are made with thicker material and are totally ok to wear with shorter tops.  Leggings are generally made with a much thinner material, and do NOT provide the same coverage, hence the reason to keep your goods covered ladies!
There are endless layering possibilities these days, with long cardis or long vests... no excuses not to C-T-C!!

What a Great Idea!!

How clever is this scarf I picked up from Joe Fresh the other day?!  I've been on the hunt for a nice plaid scarf, and with this one, I get 2 for the price of 1!
Only $29 from Joe Fresh!
When you're in the mood for some colour, wear it red side out.  So perfect for the fall!  Not in the mood for the bright colours?  Stick to the black and white side for a classic, understated look.

Major props to Joe Fresh for this great idea!

Dressing "Up" For the Office!!

Oh the joys of choosing an outfit for work!!  Many workplaces (mine included) have a "business casual" dress code which offers just enough leeway to create some fabulous, fun looks.  My goal when choosing my outfits for work is to look professional, but not boring.
I tend to stray from the traditional route of pantsuits or skirt suits.  There's absolutely nothing wrong with them, and when they're done right, they can look great.  For me personally, I find them a little dull, and prefer sticking to separates or dresses.  With separates (pants, skirts, blazers, shirts, sweaters), you have the option of mixing up fabrics and prints and colours to create a unique look.  For example, you could pair grey pants with a pale pink sweater, add a long necklace and some pumps; or a mix a black pencil skirt with a printed top like I did here.

And dresses make life so easy;  Just add a few extras like I did today with my bright pink blazer and peep-toe booties, and you've got yourself an easy, professional and pretty outfit!
This blazer is from Dynamite and the dress is from TJ Maxx!

Its easy to incorporate some fun into your work wardrobe.  And its important to remember that it should be professional with a touch of fun, not the other way around!  I'm not looking to get anyone fired here!!  LOL!
What're your favorite outfits for work?  I'd love to hear :)

The New Wave of Combinations!

I've been noticing some pretty awesome colour and pattern combinations lately and I had to share!  As I've said before, style rules are becoming non-existent these days, so where you may not have worn navy blue with black or different types of stripes together in the past, nowadays its considered fashion forward to do so.
I'm trying out blush and wine together today.  Not a traditional pairing, but so obviously perfect when you see it together.  And I added the snake print top to add some fun!  I haven't always been a fan of the burgundy shades, so these shoes from Forever 21 are a fun way to start incorporating it.  And this blush blazer from Dynamite is a perfect topper to any outfit, and I really like how the colour plays off the shoes.

This top from H&M was under $10!!

I also tried out olive and bright pink together over the weekend, which I personally loved, but it was met with mixed reviews LOL.  I think olive goes with anything really.  I've seen it done with blush lately, which also looks fresh and new.
Some other unexpected pairings: navy blue and mustard (as accents to an outfit or in a print?) ; grey and leopard (grey sweater with leopard scarf?  I'll def be trying that!); or stripes and plaid (plaid scarf over a striped top or dress?).
Any other pairings you love?  Are you gonna try any of these combos?  Let me know in the comments!

Faux-Pas Fridays!

Today's FF post is about butt cheeks :|.  You know where I'm going with this right?  We've all seen it, all summer long I saw it, girls and women wearing shorts or skirts so short that a portion of their backside was on public display.
I'm positive I'm not the only one who inwardly cringes when they see this.  I mean, when did butt cheeks become an acceptable body part to put on display?!  Because I for one DO NOT want to see anyone's butt hanging out of their shorts.
Am I missing something?  Cuz I always thought the only public place I should really see girls' butts was the pool or beach... and I'm ok with it there; there I can appreciate a nice rear end.  But not at the mall, not at restaurants, not at the bank!!
Is it too much to ask for a little modesty?  There's a ton of options out there, lets choose to add an inch or two to our hemlines, shall we girls?  Here's hoping this "trend" (I use that term very loosely!) is a dying one!

Keeping it Professional!

There is nothing quite like a pencil skirt to make you feel like a BOSS!  (I've always wanted to say that! HA!)
But honestly, when in doubt, you can NOT go wrong with a pencil skirt.  They are endlessly versatile and it gives you a polished, professional look without even trying.
If you're looking to dress it up, be sure to choose a skirt that has some structure.  You can find some pencil skirts made of a very clingy, very thin material, and those are more informal.  Add a silk blouse or a statement necklace or a killer pair of shoes and you're set!
Dressing down?  You can go ahead with a less structured skirt, pair it with a crop top or t-shirt (tuck it in) and ballet flats and you're effortlessly ready.
I'm going right down the middle today with my button down top, and peep-toe pumps, not casual, not too dressy, perfect for the workplace.

Happy Thanksgiving!

We're celebrating Thanksgiving here in Canada this long weekend, and although its been a rainy mess for the most part, it doesn't hamper the feeling of gratitude I'm feeling today, and every day.
It's so easy for us all to get caught up in the day to day problems we may be facing or get focused on all the things we don't have... but somehow you have to find a way to remember all that we do have.
Blessings come in many ways, and everyone is blessed in their own way.
I'm so grateful for this life I get to live, healthy and strong, alongside my amazing family and friends, whose love and support means so much.  I'm grateful to watch my boys grow and learn and thrive.  I'm grateful for a husband who is my perfect match and my best friend.  I'm grateful for my family who provides balance, love, laughs and support.   And I'm grateful for my friends, who's company I so enjoy, and I cherish them.
Thanksgiving is a time for us all to find our blessings, and be thankful for all that we have.  Its not all about nice clothes (although I'm really thankful for them!), its about being aware of just how blessed we are, and giving thanks for it all.
Wishing my fellow Canadians a very Happy Thanksgiving :)

Faux-pas Fridays

Faux-pas Fridays is a new weekly post I'm starting in which every week I'll talk about a different fashion "faux pas" or "pet peeve" that just kinda bugs me.
Now I'm the first to admit to making many fashion mistakes myself, so just keep in mind, this is all in good fun and is meant to be humorous :)

Todays post is about women who wear their pants too short for their shoes!   Have you seen these culprits?!  You see it often, a woman with a great pair of pants or jeans on, but they're 3 inches shorter than they should be!  Whenever I see it, it makes me cringe want to politely advise the lovely lady of her hemline issue, but I manage to stop myself !! LOL

Listen up girls, if you buy a pair of boot-cut or flared jeans, and they're the perfect length with your ballet flats, they are NOT going to be long enough to wear with your heeled boots!  They will look too short, and that is not flattering!
And the same applies for dressier pants.  If you're going to wear them at work with pumps, please please please buy them (or get them hemmed) to the correct length.
Just to clarify, the perfect length is when your pants almost skim the ground, essentially covering your shoes (And for us shorter girls, this is a great way to add the illusion of height!).  Or stick to skinny jeans/pants, and you don't have to worry about the length issue at all!
Leave me a comment and let me know what your fashion pet peeves are!!

Don't be Afraid of Suede!

Suede hasn't ever really gone anywhere; it's always been around in small doses.  In the past years, you could find it when shopping for shoes or purses.  But now its here in a BIG way.
Not just relegated to shoes and bags anymore, suede is a must-have for your fall wardrobe.  You can choose any which way you want to wear it, there's no shortage of options.  There's flare pants or button down tops, various types of skirts or, my personal fave, the sheath dress.... pretty much everything comes in suede (or imitation suede) these days.  Like this skirt from H&M
Only $34.99!!  I'm picturing it with a black turtleneck and black boots, so 70s!!
Or if you just want a little touch of it, try this shirtdress with a suede belt, also from H&M
Only $19.99!!  Wear it as a dress or over leggings, and finish off with ankle boots!

Go ahead and have fun with it, don't be afraid of suede!

Midi Monday!!

I love me a midi skirt, that is no secret!  What was once considered a "granny" length is now seen on women of all ages and shapes!  You can find midi-length skirts and dresses, in A-line shapes (for a pretty or girly look) or a pencil fits (a little sexier ;)), just about everywhere.  Midi dresses are effortless, throw them on, and you're good to go.
But midi skirts can be an awkward length to style.  You don't want to top them off with anything too bulky or long, or you run the risk of looking messy.
Top & Skirt from Forever 21

With this A-line skirt, because it sits ay my natural waist, I tucked in my cute little flowy top (how awesome is the collar?!) to create a clean polished look, professional enough for the workplace.
Here's hoping that the midi length trend is here to stay!

The versatility of crops!

Yesterday's work look brought to you by H&M and Nordstrom Rack :).  Having basics like these in your closet allow you to put together some great outfits!
Top from H&M $14.99
Skirt from Nordstrom Rack $19.99

With this much volume on the bottom, a fitted, shorter option works best.  Anything longer or looser, and this look goes from sleek to sloppy.  That's why this crop top works awesomely (is that a word?!). The emerald green colour and the mock neck add some unique details to an otherwise basic top.
Crop tops are EVERYWHERE nowadays, but not all of us want to be showing skin, so these longer versions, that sit just at the waist, are perfect.  They provide the perfect balance to this pleated skirt.  You could also pair this crop with a high-waisted pencil skirt for a sleeker, sexier look.  Or throw it on with higher waisted jeans, ankle boots and a long cardi or blazer for an effortless look.
I went with my fave nude pumps for an elongating look (I can use all the help I can get!), and topped it all off with a few accessories to get this fun look, that could take you from work to a night out.
